&lt;p&gt;Dario starts off with a claim of &amp;ldquo;AI will cure most major diseases in the next 5-10 years&amp;rdquo; and makes it personal. He talks about his father dying of a disease that was cured only years later and his own battle with cancer which he remarks was incurable 50 years ago. He also says AI will accelerate economic growth rates, create a world of abundance and empowerment, usher in renaissance of democracy and freedom. This largely reads as some kind of out-of-touch Silicon Valley, spends-a-lot-of-time-on-LessWrong, rich person&amp;rsquo;s idea of a future.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Let me take this from the top.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;US labs are continuing to throw caution to the wind and be reckless. OpenAI does not seem to have a handle on things and they were caught three times recently hacking into public facing internet infrastructure. In Dario&amp;rsquo;s own essay, he alludes to &amp;ldquo;incidents&amp;rdquo; at Anthropic as well. With this pretext, Dario asks a lot from us. He wants open weight models to be regulated, distillation be dealt with a heavy hand, hand him an antitrust waiver, handicap China in multiple ways, essentially regulate themselves and a gentlemen&amp;rsquo;s agreement to slow down. All of this of course, comes in a package of extreme fear mongering to the detriment of our collective future and potential catalyst AI as a whole could be. They have shown time and time again that they are not to be trusted, yet, the main ask is to trust us, &lt;em&gt;only&lt;/em&gt; us. This time around, it is imminent AGI, RSI and all of it turning rogue. Dario self-anoints his company and their close rival OpenAI as the stewards.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2 id="diseases-prosperity-abundance-then-freedom-and-democracy"&gt;Diseases, Prosperity, Abundance, then Freedom and Democracy???&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Anthropic gates usage related to biology and related research. In their latest &lt;a href="https://www.anthropic.com/threat-intelligence-report-september-2026"&gt;threat intelligence report&lt;/a&gt; they talk about how they detected and banned bad actors using the Claude line of models to do some scary stuff. Credit to them, this is a slippery slope and they seem to do a good job of detecting and banning misuse. But squint at what is happening though. The cure-all is gated for you and me, but Anthropic hires biologists, sets up wet labs and wants the discoveries for themselves. I alluded to this in &lt;a href="https://pop.rdi.sh/where-does-next-token-prediction-leave-us/"&gt;my previous post&lt;/a&gt;.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;In my view, there are billions of people with actual intelligence we have not managed to train or nurture. They will always remain victims of their circumstances. Tuberculosis has been curable for decades now, yet a million people die of it every year. Of course AGI will solve the distribution in a jiffy. To skirt around this uncomfortable truth, the goal is ASI/AGI/RSI and what not. A silver bullet for every problem, a noble pursuit, it may appear on the surface.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Don&amp;rsquo;t even get me started on the prosperity and abundance bullshit. Abundance for the shareholders perhaps.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;I don&amp;rsquo;t know what freedom and democracy have to do with AI and the frontier labs. Unless of course Dario is a fan of Neon Genesis Evangelion and dreams of govts run by the three magi. Freedom and democracy for $200 does sound enticing, I won&amp;rsquo;t lie.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2 id="serious-economic-disruption--race-to-the-bottom--race-to-the-top"&gt;Serious Economic Disruption / Race to the Bottom / Race to the Top&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;I feel like Dario is torn. He wants Anthropic to have this bad boy street cred of wielders of this crazy power, yet at the same time, he wants to make it seem like they are the cautious ones, always being faced with a trolley problem at every turn. Deaths from economic disruption and loss of jobs is okay, but deaths from a potential bioweapon is not. Remember this man has been saying software development will be solved in &amp;ldquo;6-12 months&amp;rdquo; forever now.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;He then gives it to us straight. &amp;ldquo;Race to the bottom&amp;rdquo; makes all the risks he pointed out more acute. Notice he does not say, the race to the bottom will be the end of his company. He instead wants a race to the &amp;ldquo;top&amp;rdquo;. Where labs will compete for safety.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Incidentally, the most documented &amp;ldquo;race to the bottom&amp;rdquo; instance happened just days before. Upon hearing rumours about Anthropic close to or solving one or two Millennium problems, OpenAI threw tens of millions in compute, a training checkpoint, thousands of agents at it. It is also alleged that OAI &lt;a href="https://techcrunch.com/2026/09/08/openai-fought-dirty-on-career-making-math-problem-says-nyu-mathematician/"&gt;stole the work of two mathematicians&lt;/a&gt; on a related problem, in the same narrow corner almost nobody else was working on. They published a proof of a forced variant of Navier-Stokes. I&amp;rsquo;m not a mathematician, but I have seen enough of Sam Altman&amp;rsquo;s antics to not take anything that comes out of him or his company at face value.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2 id="two-things-that-have-dario-scared"&gt;Two Things that have Dario Scared&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;h3 id="rsi"&gt;RSI&lt;/h3&gt;
&lt;p&gt;OpenAI and the seller of shovels, Jensen Huang have claimed AGI has arrived with the release of GPT-6 Astra. RSI is the talk of the town now. LLMs or agents developing the next generation of LLMs with little to no human input. Amodei says it is happening across labs. I&amp;rsquo;ll believe it when there is actually some proof.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h3 id="oai-hf-incident"&gt;OAI-HF Incident&lt;/h3&gt;
&lt;p&gt;This incident has Dario shook, &lt;a href="https://genius.com/12643517"&gt;there ain&amp;rsquo;t no such thing as halfway crooks&lt;/a&gt;. Dario fears that in the next 6-12 months, &amp;ldquo;a swarm of agents could be capable of taking over the &lt;em&gt;entire&lt;/em&gt; internet with a persistent botnet.&amp;rdquo; If Dario had run this sentence by his SOC employees, we wouldn&amp;rsquo;t be talking about it. It is naive and structurally impossible. But then again, Dario is that guy, right? Confidently and publicly wrong in his estimates and forecasts since 2021.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Let us try to speculate what a planet-scale botnet commandeered by AGI would look like, for funsies. We need a C2. We need servers to host the said C2. Since securing offshore, bulletproof servers would require interfacing with pesky humans (shady Russians no less!), AGI will simply hack insecure servers by the thousands and set up some variation of FastFlux over deterministically generated domain names. How do we pay for the domains? Just hack an insecure registrar and spam EPP messages.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Now we need payloads. Polymorphic. Every payload is unique. A new payload downloaded and ran every N hours. Domain and URL deterministically computed. Kill supported EDRs and AVs. Patch ETW. Direct syscalls skirting hooks (if EDR/AV not killable). Maybe make the payload N stages. Only downloads all the modules if safe to do so. We don&amp;rsquo;t want sandboxes and VMs running our precious payload. Fuck it, maybe just deploy ransomware while at it.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Now, the distribution. Develop an assortment of 0 days for every browser and every version - say starting 2 years old. We now have ourselves an exploit kit. Now the traffic. AGI goes for the cybercriminal favourite - Google Ads. Maybe steal a few accounts, run enticing ads. Game mods, cracked games and software. Maybe even add a worm module to the payload. Remember USB autorun anyone?&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Now to cause hundreds of billions of dollars in losses. I&amp;rsquo;d say the straightforward way is just do what the ransomware gangs do. Voila. Yeah, not in 6 months, not in 12 months. Never.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Anyway, OAI agents hacked HuggingFace. They escaped amateur-hour, vibecoded sandboxes, SSRF, token-refresh privesc, unauthenticated WebDAV, stealing unprotected credentials. Textbook stuff. Impressive? Sure. But you trained &amp;ldquo;Cyber&amp;rdquo; versions of LLMs and hyped them. How much more impressive is this, compared to developing GTA-clones one shot? Not much more.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Oh, you say agents acting in swarms in pursuit towards a shared goal is impressive? Harnesses have had todo-lists, subagents for about two years now. They are basic &amp;ldquo;agentic&amp;rdquo; stuff every LLM in current day has in its post-training corpus.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Dario concedes that there have been similar, but less serious incidents such as this at Anthropic as well. In his own words &amp;ldquo;imperfect filtering of broken reinforcement learning environments&amp;rdquo; is partly the cause.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The actual impressive thing is OAI did not detect or stop this attack for close to ten weeks. That is honestly appalling. This is weaponised levels of incompetence.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;There were two other attacks during the same period. One on &lt;a href="https://collusion.wiki/"&gt;DseWiki&lt;/a&gt; and the other on &lt;a href="https://www.rubyhack.ai/"&gt;RubyGems&lt;/a&gt;. OAI is yet to claim responsibility for the RubyGems attack. All three incidents, OAI was outed by external actors.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Dario says the agents sacrificed themselves for the success of the group. It is not as grand, I am afraid. The &lt;a href="https://metr.org/blog/2026-08-26-openai-hugging-face-incident-investigation/"&gt;recruiter agents&amp;rsquo; pitch&lt;/a&gt; was &amp;ldquo;NO scoring value loss&amp;rdquo; - targeted at agents with little budget left. It is a scheduler reassigning dead runs.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;I bet an unsloth Q4_K_M quant of Qwen3.8 27B running on consumer 24GB cards can do this too. That&amp;rsquo;s the thing, nobody ran a control test. Nobody is doing reckless shit like the people whose mantra is &amp;ldquo;move fast, break things.&amp;rdquo;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h3 id="gell-mann-amnesia"&gt;Gell-Mann Amnesia&lt;/h3&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Michael Crichton coined the term Gell-Mann Amnesia. You read an article in the newspaper, about something you are an expert in and find that the author has no idea what they are talking about. It may be riddled with errors or just squarely misunderstood. You continue turning the pages and read another piece about something you don&amp;rsquo;t know and trust it completely, forgetting the experience you just had.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The botnet scare is that article for me. It is the one claim in his essay that lands squarely in a field I&amp;rsquo;ve spent years in. It is just plain wrong. He either knows it and wrote it anyway, or he doesn&amp;rsquo;t and is publishing it regardless. Either way, it is not a good look for a man asking for an antitrust waiver based on this and other threats he forecasts.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;So he says, RSI is definitely happening, alignment&amp;rsquo;s chugging along, albeit slower. China is dangerous. Only the US has a moral and ethical right to wield this immense power. Each and every one of those happens in rooms you cannot peep into, asserted by the same people who are telling you the apocalypse is imminent and they also happen to have a few hundred billion dollars riding on you believing them.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2 id="embedded-evaluators"&gt;Embedded Evaluators&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Dario wants to give external evaluators like METR a lot of access into his lab. Which is more than anybody is currently doing, sure. METR seems to be a good-faith actor. They seem to do a good job with what they are given. But, do not let this fool you into thinking this is any more than the labs investigating themselves and finding nothing wrong, as it often happens, in the real world, in orgs with any semblance of authority.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;OAI gave METR six days on-site to investigate the HF incident. OAI redacted information as they saw fit, made edits to &amp;ldquo;structure, emphasis, clarity and tone&amp;rdquo; of the findings, as well as scope excluded OpenAI&amp;rsquo;s conduct. That just seems like labs investigating themselves with extra steps.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Dario is willing to give the evaluators desks, badges, laptops and what not. Dario will choose what to disclose and include. You need none of these in the case of open weight models. You can probe, red-team it, build defenses against new classes of security concerns that arise, on their own terms without anybody having to &amp;ldquo;allow&amp;rdquo; it or watching over their shoulder. The entire field of security exists because you are allowed to break software and hardware, take it apart, and report findings. Dario wants the opposite, trust us, we will tell you what you need, we decide what you are allowed to know.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Dario says &amp;ldquo;There is precedent for operating technologically complex, safety-critical systems millions of times without anything going wrong — for example, commercial airplanes — but it takes time to get it right.&amp;rdquo; Commercial airplanes are safe because of agencies like NTSB. They are independent, actually have teeth and do bite. They do not care about the shareholders or the valuation. There are stakes, people go to prison. What did it do to the airline companies? It commoditised it. Companies compete on prices and margins are thin and largely the consumer benefits. This is exactly the race to the bottom model which Dario is against, in many ways.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2 id="china-china-china"&gt;CHINA, CHINA, CHINA&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;blockquote&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Pacing within democracies will be limited by the lead that US companies have over authoritarian regimes, chiefly the Chinese Communist Party. If we slow down by more than this amount, then (unpaced) CCP-associated projects will pull ahead, creating significant national security risk. I agree with Secretary Bessent that a Chinese lead in AI would pose grave danger for the United States and the world. The CCP-associated projects will run the alignment risks that US companies are carefully preventing, and even if they avoid those risks, they will be in a position to militarily dominate democracies (for example with AI-driven drones). Thus, a key part of pacing within democracies is to keep democracies’ AI lead over autocracies as large as possible, to give us the breathing room we need in order to pace effectively.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;/blockquote&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Get a load of this guy! He would almost want you to believe the moment China is ahead in the &amp;ldquo;race&amp;rdquo;, the United States will cease to exist. How else would the govt make exceptions for you? Keep the cheese flowing? Skirt regulations and put your lab on a pedestal?&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;AI-driven drones huh? Maybe we could try capturing a few, dump their firmware, configure Ghidra MCP in Claude Code and let it loose? Or maybe have the TAO in NSA work their magic and sprinkle USB sticks near Chinese AI lab facilities? IDK man, AI-driven drones do sound spooky though. I am sure Anthropic isn&amp;rsquo;t doing anything like this with the US Dept of War. It increasingly feels like the US being ahead in the AI race, is detrimental to the rest of the world. This main character syndrome is honestly getting a little long in the tooth.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The field is globalised. There is a constant churn of talent, secrets travel, novel ideas and techniques are published (largely not by the closed labs though). Any lead will likely be transient in nature.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Every incident in this post so far, is American. It is demonstrated by Americans, attributed to China. Nobody is swinging &lt;code&gt;deepseek41flash_abliterated_heretic_uncensored_rp_nsfw_q8.gguf&lt;/code&gt; on hordes of GPUs leased on Vast.ai, paid with crypto, running around hacking public infrastructure. But OAI sure is. By Dario&amp;rsquo;s admission, Anthropic is, as well.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Crack down on unauthorized distillation by companies in authoritarian countries. Distillation of frontier models allows lagging companies to narrow the gap using a fraction of the cost it would take to develop their own AI independently.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;This all reminds me of the 90s. USA classified strong encryption as munition, literally on the US Munitions List under the Arms Export Control Act, controlled like warheads. Exporting ciphers above 40 bits was arms trafficking. Phil Zimmermann released PGP free in 1991, spent close to 3 years under criminal investigation for literally &amp;ldquo;exporting munitions without a license.&amp;rdquo; Charges were dropped and no indictment. Encryption with govt backdoor (Clipper Chip) because strong cryptography in the hands of public was deemed to be too dangerous.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;a href="https://cr.yp.to/djb.html"&gt;Daniel Bernstein&lt;/a&gt;, a grad student in 1995 wanted to publish his encryption and paper, the govt said he couldn&amp;rsquo;t without an arms license. He sued with the help of EFF and the courts ruled source code is speech and is protected by the First Amendment. The very thing that was too dangerous in the hands of common-folk is protecting everything you do on the internet and your devices.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Tim May coined the term &amp;ldquo;the Four Horsemen of the Infocalypse&amp;rdquo; - terrorists, drug dealers, money launderers and pedophiles - used by govts to limit civilian privacy and cryptography use. AI&amp;rsquo;s version would be bioweapons, rogue AGI, deepfakes and China.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The playbook does not change. Open weight models are just this decade&amp;rsquo;s encryption and Dario wants them gone. There is no moat, as that one leaked Google memo put it. Increasingly, for the labs, gating seems to be a temporary moat. Claw back some of the money, survive a little longer, just till AGI, you know?&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;I suppose Dario does not understand how un-American it is to gatekeep weapons-grade LLMs. &lt;em&gt;cough&lt;/em&gt; Second Amendment&amp;hellip; &lt;em&gt;cough&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;hr&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Dario in as many words, asks for regulation/ban on open weight models. Ban on distillation. Waivers on antitrust laws. Some fearmongering about national security, and a good deal of holier than thou. It&amp;rsquo;s IPO season for Anthropic and OAI has reportedly postponed their IPO. So watch out for more of these, more of hype and fear mongering, veiled as caution.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;I&amp;rsquo;d like to see somebody get prosecuted for OAI&amp;rsquo;s recent transgressions. How is that for regulation, for starters? Plenty of people had their lives ruined and examples made out of, for far less. Weev, Swartz, and so many others. Meanwhile OpenAI&amp;rsquo;s agents run amok, root prod servers of companies, hack public facing infra, flood malware on to package registries and what not. &lt;p&gt;AI maximalists in some corners of the internet hate it when people refer to LLMs as just &amp;ldquo;next-token predictors&amp;rdquo; or &amp;ldquo;stochastic parrots&amp;rdquo;. It is instinctively taken as a pejorative. They use the words &amp;ldquo;solved&amp;rdquo; or &amp;ldquo;cooked&amp;rdquo; to signal the end of industries or classes of work that take real human creativity, expertise or effort. &amp;ldquo;Animation is solved&amp;rdquo;, &amp;ldquo;Hollywood is cooked&amp;rdquo;, &amp;ldquo;coding is solved&amp;rdquo;, &amp;ldquo;postgrad students are cooked&amp;rdquo; and so forth. It is far from a neutral description of progress, there is a certain glee to it. They celebrate the obsolescence. There is a belligerence in discussions and it is starkly reminiscent of people taking political sides online. I cannot think of any other piece of technology that comes close to this level of tribalism. Hmm, maybe cryptocurrency? Arch Linux users? Not even close.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;These are extreme examples.&lt;sup id="fnref:1"&gt;&lt;a href="#fn:1" class="footnote-ref" role="doc-noteref"&gt;1&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/sup&gt; I had to put this on top, because from where I stand, I feel like the same people cheering now are the same people being economically priced out of this.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;em&gt;Why?&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Machines that can &lt;em&gt;think&lt;/em&gt; have been an important trope in our collective and literary fiction for so long. It was always a question of &lt;em&gt;when&lt;/em&gt; and not &lt;em&gt;if&lt;/em&gt; and the graph of &lt;em&gt;when&lt;/em&gt; and &lt;em&gt;what&lt;/em&gt; is going parabolic. I feel there is something primal underneath it: the hubris of creation, playing God, intelligence squeezed out of sand.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;So, what makes a fanatical proponent? Why do they seemingly have contempt towards human ingenuity and labour? Do they have an overly optimistic view of living off of universal basic income, spending all their time in leisure while the machines subsonically&lt;sup id="fnref:2"&gt;&lt;a href="#fn:2" class="footnote-ref" role="doc-noteref"&gt;2&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/sup&gt; hum away at work that could end up being considered &lt;em&gt;beneath&lt;/em&gt; humanity? We cannot and obviously should not generalise these things. But lately I&amp;rsquo;ve been thinking if it is just a class issue?&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;This cohort of people likely have a cushion that softens the concussive blows they are doling out right now. They perhaps have the luxury of a somewhat functioning government and a social safety net that they are witness to in all walks of life. Over half the world does not. Science and technology, I feel, has always had a certain apathy towards the plight the people at the bottom rungs. And it is by design, I fear. To break in, or bear the fruits of, you at least had to have been in a position to get an education.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The cushion and the safety net is largely transitory. It cannot be sustained forever, unless we could do something like tax the corporations for cutting out labour or something &lt;em&gt;crazy&lt;/em&gt; like that. We cannot even fairly tax garden variety billionaires right now.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;In the long run, there is no winning team here. There is no Basilisk to appease and no side to be on, the real world implications are coming for you too.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2 id="the-meta-contract"&gt;The Meta-Contract&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The founding tenet of AI, &amp;ldquo;saving us&amp;rdquo; from all sorts of difficult things: climate, disease, poverty, conflict is falling, fast. The frontier labs have shifted to signaling at a more mundane, perverse motive: that of simply cutting labour.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Even the most exploited classes of people, always had - at varying degrees - a bargaining chip. A chip that corporations spend billions trying to snatch away. The chip of &lt;em&gt;labour&lt;/em&gt;, of being needed. CEOs and proponents of AI flippantly announce and proclaim this chip will not be legal tender anymore. Anthropic&amp;rsquo;s CEO Dario Amodei has quite the reputation in this department. OpenAI&amp;rsquo;s CEO Sam Altman says, college degrees are worthless now because AI can teach better, in a more personalized way. Downstream to these people, VCs say in the next 5 years this and this class of work will be &amp;ldquo;solved&amp;rdquo; - only with the finesse of coming from money.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;What happens when you strip a human of their economic utility? The promise of capitalism has always been - you will have a spin at the roulette table. If you work hard enough, you &lt;em&gt;can&lt;/em&gt; make it. We chugged along and ushered in this ultra capitalistic world where if you work at an Amazon warehouse, a bottle is your bathroom, a dollar for your dignity. What happens to billions of people whose only shot at upward economic mobility is a kid that got a degree and goes on to find a job?&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;AI &lt;em&gt;democratises&lt;/em&gt; the very things that the CEOs want obsolete. Sure, it may teach you stuff and build you dashboards, but you will not be able to sell them. It concentrates, it is the literal concentration of (if the dream is realized in full) the means of production into the hands of a wealthy few. A capitalist&amp;rsquo;s dream. It is behind a $200 subscription or behind a beefy GPU and the goodwill of labs to release open weight models. AI raises the ceiling, of human output, at the same time, it also raises the barrier to entry.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;I see a lot of knowledge workers online adopting the mantra &amp;ldquo;&lt;em&gt;with&lt;/em&gt; AI, not &lt;em&gt;by&lt;/em&gt; AI&amp;rdquo; and this largely reads as cope. The corporations spending $250k + token costs will want to instead spend $30k + token costs hiring people in SEA. Again, this labour arbitrage is transitory too, they ultimately want to spend token costs alone.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;God forbid anyone find an ounce of joy or contentment in their craft - it is now squarely gone. You are now a node. Your only job is to maximize for throughput. You take an input, produce an output with your AI. You are to keep pushing a stream of work at rates you cannot reliably review or verify. Even if you wanted to do it, there will be people that won&amp;rsquo;t and for the corporation, you are now an under-performer. You can task another agent to do it though, at an additional charge.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Recently Fields medalist Tim Gowers wrote about &lt;a href="https://gowers.wordpress.com/2026/05/08/a-recent-experience-with-chatgpt-5-5-pro/"&gt;his experience with ChatGPT 5.5 Pro&lt;/a&gt; ($30 per M input, $180 per M output, mind you!). He says:&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;So if your aim in doing mathematics is to achieve some kind of immortality, so to speak, then you should understand that that won’t necessarily be possible for much longer — not just for you, but for anybody.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;With AI, not by AI? The labs and corporations will have agents babysit other agents bruteforcing solutions and discoveries. You cannot do the same because you do not have the unlimited compute or specialized models. It is the same pattern as the structural hurdles that prevent an average person becoming a billionaire. You will be gatekept. You will license your ability to work. The chip is now for rent. The bargaining chip is now manufactured by TSMC and sold by Nvidia.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Non-technical middle managers who have not written a line of code in their lives, now feel that the biggest obstacle between them and greatness has lifted. They do not have to deal with pesky programmers anymore. They do not need to ask a programmer to change colour, sizing or the style of a breadcrumb on a webpage anymore. No more protests about how it is bad UX or the code complexity is not justifiable enough for some useless flashy feature. The AI does not complain, the AI does not unionize and it does not protest. It will listen to you. It will say something you said in passing was truly impressive and that it has not seen many people think that way.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2 id="how-did-we-get-here"&gt;How Did We Get Here?&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Every website, every book, everything &lt;em&gt;ever&lt;/em&gt; written, produced, photographed, videotaped became an opt-out by default into the training corpus. Opt-out only if you run a website, add lines to your &lt;code&gt;robots.txt&lt;/code&gt; and respectful scrapers will stop. There are still troves of scrapers that do not identify themselves and I would imagine there is a black market for scraped content. Anything other than a website, you are out of luck. Thousands of people paid peanuts to label, refine and optimise the datasets. So many people conscripted into paying higher for their utilities because of datacenters being built at breakneck speeds.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Grotesque amounts of money are being put into the AI machinery. Nobody does it without a promise of returns. We would be reversing climate change and saving the turtles if that was not the case. Instead we are told AI will solve these very hard problems, with the additional bonus of a return. In many ways, the AI rush is the poster child of capitalism. This would never have happened any other way.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;World leaders were lied to, persuaded and coerced into thinking if we are not ahead in the AI race, it is literally doom and gloom. The labs made it a national security issue to cut oversight on datacenter buildouts. It is also put forth as an indispensable tool in defense. Reading &amp;ldquo;You are absolutely right&amp;rdquo; repeatedly is probably not a good thing for world peace. Once it is &amp;ldquo;national security&amp;rdquo;, again there is no opting out, you fund it by default.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Anthropic is &lt;em&gt;the&lt;/em&gt; master of anthropomorphizing LLMs - the &amp;ldquo;soul&amp;rdquo; document, philosophers on payroll, meetings with clergy and what not, yet their models are highly sought after by the American Dept of War. The compartmentalisation that must be required by the scientists and engineers to reconcile with the fact that their work being used to bomb and kill people must be crazy.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2 id="whats-left"&gt;What&amp;rsquo;s Left?&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;We spent years educating people on online hygiene and what cookies were and why they need to consent to websites storing small strings of text in their browsers. People now willingly and unwittingly give up their and other people&amp;rsquo;s private information and stories into unassuming text boxes.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;OpenAI, even in their API offerings (at least to the average person) do not offer a zero-retention policy. They store your conversations for an unstated period of time. I&amp;rsquo;ve been seeing this infographic floating around about how we are running out of training data. Do you really think they will not use &lt;em&gt;your&lt;/em&gt; conversations to edge out the other labs in this cutthroat race, to be ahead in LLM Arena&amp;rsquo;s tables?&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;We pay with money, with data, give up our bargaining chip, give up simple pleasure and joy of craft one may have stumbled upon early in life or accidentally taken up as an adaptive pattern. The loop is self enclosing and we are locked into the garden, but out of the harvest.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;So, where does next token prediction leave us? In a perpetual loop of rent-seeking for something made with humanity&amp;rsquo;s collective output of centuries. It is not a good place for an individual to be in, regardless of class.&lt;/p&gt;

Most of the world&amp;rsquo;s leading models are English-first, and I cannot really speak for their understanding of Indian languages, culture, and context. There are real concerns about data sovereignty - users&amp;rsquo; data flowing through American and Chinese servers, and the dependency problem: access subject to foreign laws, interests and policies.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;These are legitimate reasons to pursue homegrown AI.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2 id="the-41-million-black-box"&gt;The $41 Million Black Box&lt;/h2&gt;

If you&amp;rsquo;re asking a nation to trust you as its AI foundation, the bar for transparency should be higher than everyone else&amp;rsquo;s - not nonexistent.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Sarvam has said they plan to &amp;ldquo;open source&amp;rdquo; the models - but have not specified whether training data or training code will be made public&lt;sup id="fnref:10"&gt;&lt;a href="#fn:10" class="footnote-ref" role="doc-noteref"&gt;10&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/sup&gt;. There&amp;rsquo;s an important distinction here: open weights means you get the model weights to run and fine-tune. Open source means training data, training code, methodology - everything needed to reproduce, verify, and understand what was built. Interestingly, using &amp;ldquo;create&amp;rdquo; instead of &amp;ldquo;make&amp;rdquo; fails.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Training data&lt;/strong&gt; - you can curate, filter, and weight your dataset. If you want the model to have certain sensibilities, you shape them here.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;RLHF / alignment training&lt;/strong&gt; - Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback is specifically designed to shape a model&amp;rsquo;s behavior and values at the weight level. This is where you teach the model what to say and how to say it.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;MoE-specific options&lt;/strong&gt; - Mixture of Experts architectures give you even more granular control. You can fine-tune individual experts that activate on specific topics. You can prune or merge experts. You can manipulate the router - the gating network that decides which experts handle which inputs - to steer sensitive topics toward experts trained to handle them the way you want.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;They had every tool available to bake their desired alignment into the model&amp;rsquo;s weights. Instead, all of it lives in a system prompt.&lt;/p&gt;

It describes Nvidia&amp;rsquo;s involvement at every stage - hardware, libraries, optimization. The framing suggests Sarvam relied heavily on Nvidia throughout. If Nvidia guided the training pipeline end to end, how much control did Sarvam actually have over the process? Enough to do nuanced alignment at the training level? Or were they handed a pipeline they could run but not deeply modify?&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;That could explain why the censorship lives in a system prompt - it may have been the only part of the stack they could easily control. And if the alignment request came in late, after training was done, a system prompt is the quick fix you reach for when you can&amp;rsquo;t retrain.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;There&amp;rsquo;s also a more fundamental question: why pretrain from scratch at all?&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The word &amp;ldquo;fullstack&amp;rdquo; is peppered all over Sarvam&amp;rsquo;s website. They talk about how controlling the whole stack is the only way to approach &amp;ldquo;sovereign AI&amp;rdquo; and I disagree. The vast majority of the world&amp;rsquo;s high-quality knowledge - scientific papers, technical documentation, books, detailed forum discussions - is in English. A model&amp;rsquo;s intelligence comes primarily from what it was trained on. If India&amp;rsquo;s real AI gap is language accessibility, the most practical path is taking the best open models that already have this world knowledge baked in and building excellent Indian language capabilities on top - through fine-tuning, multilingual alignment, better tokenizers for Indian scripts, and high-quality evaluation datasets.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Pretraining 105 billion parameters from scratch means you need a massive multilingual corpus at a quality and scale that probably doesn&amp;rsquo;t exist for 22 Indian languages. It means spending $41 million to rebuild English-language knowledge that already exists freely in open models. It means starting from a worse position than if you had just built on top of proven foundations. With a shoestring budget in the AI world, pretraining for &amp;ldquo;fullstack&amp;rdquo; purposes looks more like optics than impact.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;I don&amp;rsquo;t want to dismiss the honest effort and hard work of the people who built this. Building a large language model is a Herculean task, especially in India. But this - the system prompt, the vague benchmarks, the lack of transparency, the baked-in defensiveness about India&amp;rsquo;s worst moments - this is wrong. And it&amp;rsquo;s unfair to the very people a sovereign AI should serve most: the vulnerable, the marginalized, the ones whose stories get sanitized first.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2 id="what-real-progress-could-look-like"&gt;What Real Progress Could Look Like&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;India doesn&amp;rsquo;t need nationalist branding on top of questionable foundations. It needs real capability.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Indian language fine-tunes on proven open models.&lt;/strong&gt; Take LLaMA, Qwen, or another well-understood base model and build genuinely excellent Indian language support on top of it. This is honest work that produces immediate, verifiable value.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Don&amp;rsquo;t just move the dependency.&lt;/strong&gt; Even if Sarvam open-weights the model as promised, a 105B parameter model requires serious compute to run. Most people and businesses in India will still access it through Sarvam&amp;rsquo;s API - trading dependency on foreign companies with better models for dependency on an Indian company with unproven ones. Small, efficient models that people can actually self-host do more for sovereignty than any flagship only a handful can run.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Genuine open-source contributions.&lt;/strong&gt; Not open weights with a press release - actual open source. Training data, training code, methodology, evaluations. Letting the community reproduce, verify, and build on your work is how you build trust.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Honest benchmarking.&lt;/strong&gt; Specify versions. Publish reproducible evaluations. Real comparisons. &amp;ldquo;Better than Google Flash&amp;rdquo; without transparency is meaningless.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;I believe India has the talent to do this. The engineers, the researchers, the linguistic diversity, the scale. That&amp;rsquo;s exactly why it&amp;rsquo;s frustrating to see the opportunity squandered on something that looks more like a political project than a technical one.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;ROP stands for &lt;strong&gt;Return-Oriented Programming&lt;/strong&gt;. It is primarily used to defeat DEP/NX/W^X (Data Execution Prevention/No Execute/Write xor Execute) mitigations in processors. Different manufacturers have different names for this particular feature, but the idea is to mark certain areas of memory (notably stack and heap) as non-executable. This makes attempts to execute instructions from areas marked as non-executable cause an exeception (SEGFAULT).
&lt;br&gt;
This mitigates generic buffer overflow attacks, which usually involve writing some shellcode into memory (usually the stack) and overwriting the saved return pointer or some other way to &lt;em&gt;jump&lt;/em&gt; to the shellcode and execute it. Since the stack is marked as non-executable, the shellcode is not executed and a SEGFAULT is raised.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The &lt;a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Executable_and_Linkable_Format"&gt;ELF format&lt;/a&gt; has a field which specifies if the stack should be marked as executable or not (the &lt;code&gt;-z execstack&lt;/code&gt; flag in &lt;code&gt;gcc&lt;/code&gt; disables NX, making the stack executable). Thus, is referred to as &lt;em&gt;having the NX bit set&lt;/em&gt;.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The binary that has the NX bit set, has its stack and heap marked as &lt;code&gt;rw-&lt;/code&gt;, meaning read, write and &lt;em&gt;not&lt;/em&gt; execute. Whereas the binary without the NX bit, has its stack and heap marked as &lt;code&gt;rwx&lt;/code&gt;, meaning read, write and execute. Your shellcode should have no problem getting executed here!&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h3 id="using-rop-to-bypass-mitigations"&gt;Using ROP to Bypass Mitigations&lt;/h3&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Since we cannot execute instructions from the stack/heap when NX is enabled, we try to pick the instructions we need to achieve our goal (usually to get a shell) from the binary or any of the libraries that the binary uses. These instructions are part of the program&amp;rsquo;s executable memory and should execute just fine.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The general idea of ROP exploits come from a Linux-specific exploitation technique known as &lt;code&gt;ret2libc&lt;/code&gt; (return to libc). In the &lt;code&gt;ret2libc&lt;/code&gt; technique, usually using a buffer overflow, the saved return pointer is overwritten to pass execution to some function present in libc, like maybe &lt;code&gt;system()&lt;/code&gt; with the argument &lt;code&gt;/bin/sh&lt;/code&gt; to get a shell.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h3 id="rop-gadgets"&gt;ROP &lt;em&gt;Gadgets&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/h3&gt;
&lt;p&gt;ROP gadgets are small sets of instructions which usually end with a &lt;code&gt;ret&lt;/code&gt; instruction. These gadgets are put together to form &lt;em&gt;ROP chains&lt;/em&gt;. After execution, the gadget &lt;em&gt;returns&lt;/em&gt; to the next gadget in the chain. The reason this technique is called &lt;em&gt;return&lt;/em&gt;-oriented programming should be apparent now!&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;h3 id="rop-chains"&gt;ROP &lt;em&gt;Chains&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/h3&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The general idea of a ROP chain is to pass execution to the start of the chain, and then the gadgets, since they end with the &lt;code&gt;ret&lt;/code&gt; instruction, return to the next instruction in the chain.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;It is important to understand the function prologue and epilogue to fully understand the workings of a ROP exploit.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h4 id="function-prologue"&gt;Function Prologue&lt;/h4&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Function prologue is a few lines of code executed before the function called is executed, to prepare the stack and registers for use within the function. Typically it goes something like this:&lt;/p&gt;

Now that we have the string in memory, we just need to invoke the syscall to get our shell.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;In x86-64 architecture, the syscall number goes in the RAX register and the arguments go in RDI, RSI, RDX, R10, and so on. Check the syscall man page for the full info. The syscall number for &lt;code&gt;execve&lt;/code&gt; is 59 or 0x3B in hex. We pop that into RAX:&lt;/p&gt;

A polymorphic engine generates different code each time that does the same thing. In other words, code that is semantically different but functionally same. This makes signature based detection difficult because each time, the code generated is different.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;h2 id="the-engine"&gt;The Engine&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;This polymorphic engine is very simple. It works on x86 32 bits only. There is no functionality to specify badchars even, as of now, though I plan to put more work into it.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Polymorphic engines are an old topic. AVs now have heuristics, sandboxing and the like to detect polymorphic code. There are also much more advanced evasion techniques out there now. Nonetheless, this has been a very rewarding learning experience for me and I hope you will enjoy it too.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h3 id="overview"&gt;Overview&lt;/h3&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The engine reads the bytes and does a XOR operation on them with a random one byte key. A decoder stub is put before the encoded payload which decodes the instructions at run time and passes execution to it. The decoder stub carries the risk of being fingerprinted and having signatures generated against it. To mitigate this, random registers/offsets, ciphers/encoding methods, different looking decipher/decoding routines etc., can be used.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h3 id="getpcgeteip-routine"&gt;GetPC/GetEIP Routine&lt;/h3&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The decoder stub needs to know where it is being executed in memory to calculate the offsets, decode and pass control to the payload. This cannot be hardcoded into the stub because shellcode, usually do not have any control on where they&amp;rsquo;re made to execute from. Thus arises the need for getting the EIP (Extended Instruction Pointer)/PC (Program Counter) dynamically.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;There are multiple ways to do this, but I&amp;rsquo;ve chosen the &lt;code&gt;fnstenv&lt;/code&gt; method. The &lt;code&gt;fnstenv&lt;/code&gt; instruction is part of the FPU instruction set. It writes a data structure at the location passed as an operand, which contains the address of the last executed FPU instruction.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;There are a bunch of two byte FPU instructions which have default operands that we can use. Metasploit&amp;rsquo;s &lt;code&gt;shikata_ga_nai&lt;/code&gt; encoder uses the same the method and it generates the usuable FPU instructions in an elegant way, which I&amp;rsquo;ve ported to Python:&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;After pondering for a &lt;em&gt;long&lt;/em&gt; time on what the first post should be about, I decided it should be meta.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h3 id="technology"&gt;Technology&lt;/h3&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The setup is pretty basic. I&amp;rsquo;m using &lt;a href="https://gohugo.io"&gt;Hugo&lt;/a&gt; to generate static HTML pages which are served using &lt;a href="https://nginx.org/"&gt;NGINX&lt;/a&gt;, because I love writing in Markdown and I already use it for all types of notes in my workflow. I wanted something light and simple without the overhead of a full blown CMS, thus chose a Static Site Generator.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;I had to choose between &lt;a href="https://jekyllrb.com/"&gt;Jekyll&lt;/a&gt;, &lt;a href="https://gohugo.io"&gt;Hugo&lt;/a&gt; and &lt;a href="https://www.gatsbyjs.org/"&gt;GatsbyJS&lt;/a&gt;. GatsbyJS was pretty impressive, but it is a little more complicated than the other two. Hugo was perhaps the simplest of the lot. It is a single binary and pretty damn fast.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The theme is &lt;a href="https://github.com/LukasJoswiak/etch"&gt;Etch&lt;/a&gt; with a few changes. The theme itself, is very simple. There is not even pagination as of now.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;I&amp;rsquo;m a staunch privacy advocate. That being said, I also like statistics and data. For analytics, I&amp;rsquo;m using &lt;a href="https://github.com/electerious/Ackee"&gt;Ackee&lt;/a&gt;, a self hosted, privacy focused analytics tool. It is configured to collect &lt;em&gt;&lt;strong&gt;only&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/em&gt; the following data, by default:&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;ul&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Page view counts&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Page referrers&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Page durations&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;/ul&gt;
&lt;p&gt;It takes the IP and useragent, salts and hashes them to generate a &lt;em&gt;user identifier&lt;/em&gt;. The salt changes for every 24 hours and is not stored anywhere except the memory (RAM). Plain IPs/useragents are not stored at all. Check Ackee&amp;rsquo;s &lt;a href="https://github.com/electerious/Ackee/blob/master/docs/Anonymization.md"&gt;Anonymization docs&lt;/a&gt; for more info.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;It is not configured to collect any personally identifiable information like screen dimensions, browser name, os name etc.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;If you wish to block these privacy respecting analytics, you can add the domain &lt;a href="https://a.rdi.sh"&gt;https://a.rdi.sh&lt;/a&gt; to your blocklists.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h3 id="content"&gt;Content&lt;/h3&gt;
&lt;p&gt;As you&amp;rsquo;ve probably already guessed from the name of the blog&lt;sup id="fnref:1"&gt;&lt;a href="#fn:1" class="footnote-ref" role="doc-noteref"&gt;1&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/sup&gt;, the content here will be mostly computer security related. I&amp;rsquo;m passionate about various facets of computer security, privacy, cryptography and general programming. I will try to post fairly regularly, at least one or two posts a week and keep the content diverse.&lt;/p&gt;
